I have been able to leverage some of the pieces from Thinktecture.IdentityModel.45 in combination with the new Windows Identity Foundation Tools to get the bootstrap token returned, but any time my app comes back with the token it is ignored and the user needs to log in again.

Any help would be appreciated, keep up the good work.

Thanks.

Are you ever going to release it for Windows 8 RTM/GA? Do you want us to use Windows Azure?

Hi

Does anyone know when the toolkit will be ready to work with Win8 RTM?

I tried modifying the environmentSetup to get around the Win8 check but it still does not recognize the VS 2012 dependency.

Any recommendation for other work-arounds?

thanks

We'll be adding a CRON capability to Mobile Services soon that will allow you to execute scripts on a scheduled basis that can send tiles (and more).

Watch this space!

Thanks

Thanks for that, I did have a look at it, looks interesting, however a few questions:

The Azure portal lets you specify the secret and SID only, and you can intercept it with the script, but my questions are:

1) How would I configure it to run a block of code every 1 hour

2) How would I get this custom code up? Basically my scenario is simple:

I have a bunch of ChannelURI's coupled with some metadata, and I want my Azure instances (currently only one) to fetch these items, call some API's I have with the metadata supplied, get the results, then push down a tile update to the associated ChannelURI.

Would Windows Azure Mobile Services enable this sort of flexibility, or would I still need to go through traditonal means?

Thanks.

New Post: Azure VSIX's not present in the current download on the page?

Hi Winston,

We just launched Windows Azure Mobile Services which I think might be very interesting to you. It makes adding a backend to a Windows 8 application incredibly easy.

Check out Scott Guthrie's introductory video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovDtALgsBuQ

Also, see how you can easily send push notifications (using all the Win 8 templates) in this easy tutorial: http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/develop/mobile/tutorials/get-started-with-push-dotnet/

Let me know if you have any questions.

Josh

http://twitter.com/joshtwist

New Post: Azure VSIX's not present in the current download on the page?

Thanks for the reply.

I see, I had a look at the sample, there's a lot of code in it!

I have a few things in regards to this:

1) Before coming to this codeplex project, I had also wondered how on earth the Service on Azure will send push notifications down to WNS, because what I found funny was the predefined _TileXXX XML templates is in some WinRT namespace, but looking at the examples it seems like you just defined all of that inside the .cshtml's, is that correct? and is that the way Microsoft is encouraging?

Also on the note of that, I realise the maximum payload size for the notifications i 5kb I think, around there, so does that mean, I can fill up my payload with a a lot of <binding> inside the <visual> tag, and it will scroll through it when it's received on the users end?

2) What is Microsoft's recommended way of handling with the Service side of things? Especially with hosting it on Azure with many instances? For example, if there's 10,000 registered ChannelURI's to broadcast/push out notifications for, is there a recommended approach to tackling this? I have spoken to another Azure DPE who has offered a few options I can take, one was to do it via stored procs and rely on table-locking to grab a batch of items, with each VM instance requesting it.

The other way was to use Azure queue's.

Just wondering, since Azure seems to be a preferred option for hosting your push notification service, are there any specifics around dealing with these scenarios?

I couldn't get the sample running but I have watched your videos, but it looks like from your end it's using a Web-Portabl to simulate the push-down, so I wasn't sure how you handle it with an automated service doing it for you.

Thanks.

New Post: Doesn't work with Windows 8 RTM

Also eagerly awaiting a version that works with Windows 8 RTM.

New Post: Metro and ACS

Thanks Thomas - i'll add to the backlog and check it out

Hi jrussomano,

There are a number of ways to deliver notifications to your client applications including Local, Scheduled, Periodic and Push. Depending on the full requirements of your application you may find one of these other methods appropriate. In general
though Push is the most flexible. To help decide which is best for your app please see -

We have dropped VSIX support in preference of providing:

NuGet packages that people can drop components into both their new and importantly existing applications. You can see a demo of the push notification flow at the end of my session here - http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/TechEd/Europe/2012/AZR310

A full end to end samples that demonstrate the same app that the VSIX was generating. You in the /Samples folder

Hey guys,

I just discovered this toolkit, and downloaded and installed it. However I don't see the Azure proejct templates, am I missing something?

Thanks.

New Post: UnRegister method doesnt work for me

Hi,

I'm using the "Windows8.Notifications" nuget library to implement the Notfications server/client.

Everything works fine, I get notifications right to the wide tile.

The issue, the UnRegister method doesn't work at all, This is my code:

            var toggle = sender as ToggleSwitch;
            var client = new NotificationClient("someID", "client", "http://myzure.azurewebsites.net/api/endpoint");
            if (toggle.IsOn)
            {
                toggle.IsEnabled = false;
                var val = await client.Register("MainTile");
                toggle.IsEnabled = true;
            }
            else
            {
                toggle.IsEnabled = false;
                await client.Unregister("MainTile");
                toggle.IsEnabled = true;
            }

it gives me this exception:

Channel is not open. Call register method first.

Can someone help me please?

Hi, I download and tested the toolkit and I managed to receive notifications in my W8 tablet.

I am working on a news app where I need to send toast notifications to all suscribers when urgent news arrive.

As I understood the services that generates the notification sends the client URI to WNS so it push it to the client.

How can I send notifications to thousands (possible millions) of clients at once?

Making thousands of post to WNS does not seems to be the way.

Thanks!
